Emmys Called Out for Using Inaccessible Stage Design for 73rd Awards Ceremony
Updated: Sep 15
Oscar-nominated director Jim LeBrecht, represented by the Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) and the Law Office of Michelle Uzeta, is calling out the Television Academy and CBS Entertainment for utilizing an inaccessible stage design for the 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards on September 19, 2021.
The Emmy Awards will be held at L.A. Live’s Event Deck, a large, highly flexible, and customizable indoor/outdoor event space sited directly behind the Microsoft Theater. Despite the space and flexibility that the Event Deck provides, Emmy organizers have utilized a stage design for the event that is inaccessible to individuals who use wheelchairs, violating the Americans with Disabilities Act and California civil rights laws. Mr. Lebrecht, through counsel, has called for the stage design to be remediated prior to the September 19 broadcast.
